Dear Parents/Guardians,
I am very excited to let you know that the Compulsory Year 3 String Program will form part of the music curriculum in Semester 1 and 2. This opportunity is provided to all students who are in Year 3.
There is no cost to you as the Parent / Guardian for these programs. This includes hire of an instrument from the College.
The Compulsory Year 3 String Program is only offered to parents who have children in Year 3 and is an incredible opportunity for your child to learn a string instrument, have targeted weekly small group lessons from a professional instrumental music teacher, all at minimal cost to you. We are excited to be able to offer such a high value program as part of the curriculum here at Northside Christian College for only the cost of renting the instrument as stated above.
There are many studies that show being in a music program enhances a student’s performance in all areas of the curriculum.
“A United States Department of Education study showed that students who had high levels of involvement in instrumental music during their middle and senior school years show significantly higher levels of mathematics proficiency by Year 12.”
– (Catterall, J., Chapleau, R., and Iwanga, J., Involvement in the Arts and Human Development, 1999)
A separate study showed that there is a high relationship between interest in school music and high self-perception, high cognitive competence scores and general self-esteem (Costa-Giomi, E. 1998).
How It Works:
Students will hire an instrument for the duration of the semester, receive weekly group lessons with a professional instrumental tutor and will also have string rehearsals during their weekly classroom music lesson. Students will also have the opportunity to perform and showcase their new skills at many events scheduled throughout the school year.
At the end of the year, students in Year 3 will return their instrument to the school. If a student wishes to continue learning, the College now offers an opt-in year 4-6 string program for all students wishing to continue on their chosen instrument. Please see the Instrumental Music Co-Ordinator if you want more information about this secondary school program.
I look forward to the journey as we continue to expand and grow the vibrant music department here at Northside Christian College.
